Signs you may need new tires
- The tread is worn down to the wear bars or looks smooth.
- Cracks, bulges, bald spots or sidewall damage.
- A tire that keeps losing air.
- A nail or screw in the tread.
- Vibration or uneven wear that rotation or alignment doesn’t fix.
- The tires are old, even if the tread still looks good. Check the date code and your manufacturer’s guidance.
New vs. used tires
New tires have full tread and a known history. Used tires cost less and can be a sensible choice for some budgets, but their condition varies, so ask about tread depth, age and any repairs before you decide.
Nail or screw in your tire?
Not every puncture means a new tire. Depending on where the damage is and how severe it is, a repair such as a plug may be possible, while damage to the sidewall generally cannot be repaired. Here’s what one customer told us:

Common questions about new & used tires
How do I check my tire tread?
Look for the wear bars molded into the grooves; if they are level with the tread, the tire is worn out. You can also use a tread-depth gauge, or the penny test: insert a penny head-first into a groove and if you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread is low.
Are used tires safe?
A used tire in good condition with plenty of tread, no sidewall damage and no unrepaired punctures can be fine. Condition is everything, so ask to see the tire before you buy.
How do I find my tire size?
